Large format drawing duringSquire Residency

I spent 2 1/2 lovely weeks as an artist-in-residence with the Squire Foundation.  I decided to use the time to start and complete a large format drawing as part of my ongoing Cell Portrait drawing series.  In this drawing I hybrid a cross-section of a blade of grass with a cross section of human skin, inclusive of sensory receptors.   The work explores the non-verbal interaction & physiological/ sensorial exchange that occurs between plant & human.

Kicking off 2015 with two exhibitions...

I'm thrilled to be participating in the following 2 exhibitions this January...

Out of the Great Wide Open

Museum of Contemporary Art, Santa Barbara

Opening Reception:  Saturday, Jan. 24th  6-8pm

Exhibit dates:  Jan. 24th - March 29th, 2015

Each year, the Museum collaborates with regional artists who support and participate in its programs, and with those new to the area interested in taking part in activities that stimulate dialogue and critical thinking on contemporary art. As an opportunity to recognize these artists’ innovative, experimental, and skillful work, MCASB organizes its 8th annual tri-county Call For Entries artist exhibition in the museum’s main galleries, this year titled Out of the Great Wide Open. The series reveals new explorations into the vibrancy of our creative terrain, having involved artists whose varied practices include performance, visual arts, writing, design, and fashion-oftentimes expanding their medium, materials, and research in remarkable ways.

The artists in the 2015 exhibition include Ryan Bulis (Santa Barbara), Cathy Ellis (Goleta),Wendy Osher (Ojai), Erik ReeL (Ventura), Sommer Roman (Santa Barbara), Nick Wilkinson(Los Osos), and Seyburn Zorthian (Solvang).

Logical Elsewhere;  New works by Sommer Roman & Jeff Page

Napa Gallery, Cal State Channel Islands

Opening Reception: Jan. 29th 6-8pm

Exhibit dates: Jan. 26 - Feb. 25, 2015

This exhibition brings together the work of artists, Jeff Page and Sommer Roman whose practices both share in their experimental investigations of materiality and process-oriented art making.

In Logical Elsewhere, materials, surfaces, and textures merge in surprising ways suggesting alternate routes of navigating the facets and forces of life, whether real, imagined, new, old, natural, or artificial.  Grit, glitter, fur, and grass, invite you to see, feel, and think beyond…
